Please schedule a consultation with one of our highly-trained podiatrists to understand the current condition of your ingrown nails and receive the proper treatment. When you meet with either Dr. Ramani or Dr. Koprince, they will examine your affected toe and review your symptoms. By assessing the severity of your condition, she can discuss with you the appropriate treatment options that will best meet your needs.
A conservative treatment will involve soaking the foot in warm water with Epsom salt or using over-the-counter topical antibiotic creams to prevent infection. You may also be advised on risk factors, such as properly trimming your toenails to prevent future ingrowth and infection, or we may prescribe antibiotics to prevent a current infection from progressing.
If the ingrown toenail is more advanced or recurrent, we will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area and use specialized instruments to remove the ingrown edge. In more severe cases, we may recommend a partial nail removal procedure called “Partial Nail Avulsion.” During this procedure, the ingrown portion of the nail is removed, sometimes a part of the nail bed, to prevent future ingrowth. The area is numbed beforehand to ensure minimal pain during the procedure.
After the procedure, your foot will be dressed with a sterile bandage and antibiotic ointment.
You will be advised to keep the area clean and wear open-toed shoes or sandals for a period to avoid putting pressure on the affected toe. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to ensure that the ingrown toenail is healing properly and to monitor your progress.
It’s essential to follow post-treatment instructions carefully to minimize the risk of recurrence. If you have recurrent ingrown toenails or if you notice signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, pain, or pus discharge, please contact us promptly for further evaluation and treatment.
