Introduction to Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy involves using stem cells, typically derived from the patient’s body or other sources, to promote tissue regeneration and healing in foot and ankle conditions. This innovative approach aims to address issues like chronic wounds, tendon injuries, and osteoarthritis by harnessing the regenerative potential of stem cells for tissue repair. Stem cell therapy promotes cartilage repair and can potentially delay the progression of these conditions.
AIRE Podiatry Studio, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, offers stem cell therapy for various foot and ankle concerns in New York City. If you are interested in this regenerative medicine treatment, please read on.

What is Stem Cell Therapy?

Stem cell therapy has shown promise in treating various foot injuries by harnessing the body’s natural healing capabilities. When applied to foot injuries, stem cells have the potential to aid in tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. Stem cells release growth factors and signaling molecules that stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This can accelerate the healing process and lead to faster foot injury recovery.

Stem cells have the unique ability to differentiate into various cell types. When injected into injured areas of the foot, they can transform into specialized cells, potentially aiding in the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues such as ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bone.

What’s the First Step?

The first step in receiving stem cell therapy for your foot pain is to schedule a consultation at AIRE Podiatry Studio with one of our expert providers. They will discuss your medical history, areas of concern, and medical complaints. They will also try to understand your functional goals and expectations. Finally, your provider will examine your feet, focusing on the target areas of concern. This will also be when they outline the stem cell therapy procedure with its associated risks, benefits, and recovery patterns.

When you both agree to proceed with the treatment, your provider will draft your treatment plan. You can then take the plan to our patient concierge for scheduling, pricing, and any pre-procedure instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of Stem Cell Therapy Treatment

On the day of your stem cell therapy treatment at AIRE Podiatry Studio, your provider and their staff will welcome you and get you settled in the procedure room. They will review the treatment plan if you have any questions. Finally, once you give the go-ahead, the process of acquiring the stem cells will begin.

This will take around twenty minutes. First, numbing medication will anesthetize the skin. Then, a small incision will be made to the side of the heel bone or the front of the leg bone to withdraw bone marrow containing stem cells into a syringe. The incision will be closed with tape or sutures.

The collected bone marrow is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the stem cells, which will then be reinjected into the target area of the foot.

These stem cells will be acting on the tissues for several days and weeks as the tissue heals and regenerates.

Stem Cell Therapy Recovery

Stem cell therapy can cause mild soreness due to the micro-injuries caused by the injection. For the first few weeks, patients can use cold compresses and painkillers that are not anti-inflammatory, as these can impede the process of stem cell therapy.
