What is a bunion?

A bunion, also called hallux valgus, is a foot deformity affecting the alignment of the bones that make up one of the joints in the big toe — the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. The MTP connects the first long bone in the foot (metatarsal) with the first bone in the big toe (phalanx).

A bunion develops when the bones that make up this joint move out of alignment. The metatarsal bone shifts towards the inside of the foot, while the phalanx leans towards the second toe. This shifting causes inflammation and enlargement of the joint, creating a bump on the inside front part of your foot.

What causes a bunion?

Bunions can be heredity, caused by an injury, or long-term use of wearing the wrong shoes.

In addition to the painful bony bump, bunions also cause corns, calluses, and stiffness in the toe that can restrict movement.

AIRE Podiatry Studio specializes in bunion care, offering the latest treatments to reduce your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

What can I expect during a bunion evaluation?

You can expect a thorough, patient-centered evaluation at AIRE Podiatry Studio when you come in for help with your bunion. They review your symptoms and how they affect your daily life and goals. They also ask about your medical history and examine your feet.

Your podiatrist X-rays your feet to assess the severity of your bunion.

What are the treatments for a bunion?

The podiatrists at AIRE Podiatry Studio take a proactive approach to bunion care. They encourage you to come in as soon as you notice the foot deformity so that they can provide treatments that might prevent it from getting worse.

Treatment can include:

  • Hyaluronic acid injections
  • Gait training
  • Strapping
  • In-house physical therapy
  • Shoe analysis
  • Custom-fitted orthotics (shoe inserts that reduce friction and improve foot movement)

The foot and ankle surgeons at AIRE Podiatry Studio will recommend the Lapidus procedure to patients with moderate to severe bunions that fail to improve with treatment. The Lapidus procedure is a minimally invasive surgery that fuses the first metatarsal bone to the small bones in your midfoot, correcting the misalignment and preventing further problems.
