Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, is a treatment that takes the patient’s own blood cells to promote healing and tissue regeneration. It is often used to treat conditions like tendonitis or plantar fasciitis. The process for creating PRP starts with drawing the patient’s blood and processing it in a centrifuge machine which isolates the platelet rich plasma. Platelets contain growth factors that help with tissue repair and regeneration. Once the PRP is obtained, it is injected directly into the injured area.

PRP offers benefits such as reduced inflammation and pain and faster healing. Since it is using your body’s own blood products it is one of the most natural ways of helping the body to heal itself. There is minimal downtime and discomfort compared with invasive procedures.

The effectiveness of PRP can vary depending on the condition being treated and the health of the individual patient since the patient’s own blood is being used. PRP is listed by the FDA as an investigational treatment because it has shown enormous promise in clinical applications but longitudinal studies demonstrating efficacy are needed to complete the approval process.

Consult with one of our podiatrists who can evaluate your specific condition and determine whether PRP is a suitable option for you.
